Turmeric, a golden spice

Curcuma longa is is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plant of the ginger family, Zingiberaceae. Very easy to grow, with a bit of luck, it will give you its beautiful flowers, before the harvest in autumn.

Dry in powder, or used fresh, this very popular spice, which goes into the « curry » powder, should liven up all your dishes. And not only for its gustative values! Used since more than 2 millenniums by the ayurvedic medicine, turmeric fascinates researchers world-wide for the uncountable healthy therapeutic virtues.

Traditionally, turmeric is used in all Asia to stimulate digestion, in particular because it increases the bile secretion. But its medicinal action does not stop there. Since several decades now, modern western medicine multiplies researches on curcuminoïds (curcumin constitutes approximately 90 % of these compounds). Very powerful antioxidants, its use in traditional medicine, in particular on treatment of diverse disorders such as rheumatic or menstrual pains, ulcers therapy and wounds as well as hurts caused by eczema for example, would be understandable, among others, by its anti-inflammatory action.

About cancer, numerous studies are in progress. From a clinical point of view, we do not have yet numerous data. But according to epidemiological data, prevalence of several cancers (colon, breast, prostate and lung) is less high in the Asian countries, big consumer of turmeric. Researchers indeed think that the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of the curcumin can play a role in prevention, but also cancer cure. In vitro, studies already indicate that curcumin inhibits the proliferation of cancer cells and that promotes the manufacturing of enzymes, which help the body to get rid of cancer cells.

Other studies show that turmeric would be also effective to boost immune system, to fight against digestive disorders and many more. It could even fight Alzheimer, by destroying the deposit of beta proteins-amyloïds, proteins that build up in blood vessels of the brain of people affected by this disease.

Consumed daily, turmeric fills the whole body, and acts in prevention. If you want your body absorbs as much as possible of curcumin, it is necessary to associate it with black pepper. Using oil and « bromelin » (principle present in pineapple and ginger) also promotes the assimilation of this active ingredient.
